Show up and build your brand

The science behind the Mere Exposure Effect

The science behind the Mere Exposure Effect

Jorge Medina

mere-exposure effect

Have you ever noticed how some brands just seem to stick in your mind without much effort?

It’s like they’re always there when you need them, almost like magic.

Well, a lot goes into it, but there’s certainly no magic involved.

One thing they all have in common is science—more specifically, the Mere Exposure Effect.

Let me explain.

This psychological phenomenon shows that people develop a preference for things simply because they’re familiar. The more they see it, the more they trust it, and eventually, the more they want it. In simpler terms: familiarity breeds favorability.

the mere-exposure effect

For brands—personal or otherwise—this is huge.

Here’s why:

When people are scrolling through social media, skimming through emails, or deciding who to work with, they’re not always ready to buy right away.

But if they keep seeing your brand, they start to recognize it.

Over time, this recognition turns into trust, and guess who’s at the top of their mind when they’re ready to purchase?

You 🫵

But here’s the catch: To be remembered, you have to show up consistently.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “But Jorge, I don’t want to be that annoying brand that’s always in people’s faces!”

Here’s the thing—you won’t be. Because consistency doesn’t mean bombarding people with sales pitches every day. It means showing up in ways that add value, spark curiosity, and build trust over time.

And trust me, the people who need your product or service will appreciate it.

You see, the self-proclaimed “gurus” and noisy brands that scream for attention?

They fade away.

But the ones that show up regularly, offer genuine value, and give their audience something to think about?

They’re the ones that stick.

So ask yourself:

  • Are you showing up enough for your audience to remember you when they’re ready to buy?

  • Are you offering real value, so when you show up, people want to see you?

If not, let this be your reminder.

You can’t be top of mind if you don’t show up at all.

Your audience is out there, and they’re waiting to remember you.

So start showing up—because that’s how you’ll become the brand they trust when the time comes to make a decision.

As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Keep showing up.
